An ambitious project for LACMA by Peter Zumthor, has focused renewed attention to the La Brea Tar Pits. The Observation Pit was built in 1952 as the parks first permanent structure and has now been restored and reopened for public tours. Originally designed by Harry Sims Bent, it is a simple brick rotunda design.
Closed in the 1990’s and obscured by overgrown plantings and painted a dull beige, it was hidden in plain sight. Kim Baer, KBDA Design, and Doug Suisman, Suisman Urban Design, have been creating the graphics for the Natural History Museum in Exposition Park and together have chosen a new palette for the structure. The building serves as a showcase for the bones of mastodons, dire wolves and saber tooth tigers.
