Happy Birthday Gaudi!

Antoni Gaudi

(25 June 1852 – 10 June 1926)

Happy Birthday Antoni Gaudi!-- One of the best Spanish and Catalan architects of all time. Under the influence of Neo-Gothic art and Oriental techniques, Gaudi served as an integral part of the Modernista movement.

His work was influenced by many subjects including nature, architecture, and religion. "Gaudí's professional life was distinctive in that he never ceased to investigate mechanical building structures. Early on, Gaudí was inspired by oriental arts (India, Persia, Japan) through the study of the historicist architectural theoreticians, such as Walter Pater, John Ruskin and William Morris. Gaudí embarked on a more personal phase, with the organic style inspired by nature in which he would build his major works.

La Sagrada Familia

One of Gaudi most famous projects is La Sagrada Familia and it remains an icon internationally today. Construction of Sagrada Família had commenced in 1882 and Gaudí became involved in 1883, taking over the project and transforming it with his architectural and engineering style, combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms.

Gaudí devoted his last years to the project, and at the time of his death at age 73 in 1926 less than a quarter of the project was complete. Sagrada Família's construction progressed slowly. Construction passed the midpoint in 2010 with some of the project's greatest challenges remaining and an anticipated completion date of 2026, the centenary of Gaudí's death.
